The Midwest Athletics will battle for first place tonight, as they begin a three game series with the Topeka Golden Giants at 7 p.m. The Golden Giants hold first place, while the A’s are in second, just 2.5 GB.
Both teams are coming off a few days rest, as the All-Star game put a halt to league play last weekend. The last time these two teams met was June 12-14, and it wasn’t very pretty for the A’s.
They lost a three game series, 1-2, and were outscored by the Giants 19-11. The A’s scored just four runs in the first two games, and had an offensive outburst in the final game, scoring seven runs. It wasn’t enough to beat the Giants’ 8 though.
In all three games, it was big innings that outdid the A’s. The Golden Giants scored five runs in the third inning of game one, and seven runs in the fifth inning of game three.
With just six league games remaining in the season, the A’s have a good opportunity to grab first place. Their final league series will be against the Junction City Brigade July 11-12. The Brigade are currently third in the Mid-Plains League.
The game starts at 7 p.m., and admission is $3.
