Midwest Athletics to face Rossville Rattlers in Round 1 of post-season tournament

The 2014 Mid-Plains Summer Classic schedule has been announced, and the Midwest Athletics will play the Rossville Rattlers at Rathert Stadium in Junction City, Kan. on Wednesday, July 16 at 7 p.m.

The A’s, who finished third place in their first year in the MPL, will face the last place Rattlers Wednesday night. The A’s went 4-2 against Rossville in regular season games.

Head coach Cody Newman is doing everything he can to get his players prepared for the post-season tournament. This includes giving them three days of rest.

“I told them Saturday night after the game to enjoy the 3 day break and find some time to get in the cage or play catch,” Newman said. “Mostly to think about the summer as a whole, the highs and lows and what was the difference with you personally in the highs verse the lows…find a way to get the confidence back in yourself to perform.”

If the A’s win against Rossville on Wednesday, they will move on to face the Topeka Golden Giants, a team they struggled against in the regular season. If they play the Giants, Newman said he has to make sure his team takes advantage of opportunities throughout the game.

“Simply put we can’t give them extra opportunities and we did that a lot against those 2 (Topeka and Junction City) teams, and we must execute in situations when we have the opportunities which we didn’t [in the regular season].”

Newman is confident in his team’s ability heading into the tournament. Newman believes that the A’s have the talent needed to win, but that the more important factor is mental toughness.

“Talent wise we are very capable of winning the first ever MPL tournament and bringing the Cowdin Cup trophy home, however the team that will win this tournament is the one who is mentally the toughest, willing to compete every pitch and give everything they have to their team and teammates,” Newman said. “Only time will tell if that is us.”
