Midwest Athletics catcher Matt Fultz hits a ground ball during the game against Rossville on Monday, June 22. The A’s offense scored eight runs on their way to a victory. The A’s are 13-4 and in first place in the Mid-Plains League.

The A’s bats were on fire last night, as they scored eight runs to beat the Rossvile Rattlers and stay in first place in the Mid-Plains League. The A’s are now 13-4 and lead Rossville by five games.

Starting pitcher Tim Roberts began the game with a rough start in the first inning, as he gave up a two run home run following a leadoff double. Roberts gave up another two singles in the inning, but finished off the next three batters to get out of a jam and limit the damage.

The A’s offense responded well in the bottom of the first however, as they quickly took the lead. Sean Maruo began the inning with a bloop single to right field, and would then score on a throwing error following a Tucker Perkins double. Perkins crossed the plate after yet another error by the Rattlers, and tied the game, 2-2. Jacob Boylan drove in the third run for the A’s, and they took a 3-2 lead.

Roberts found his groove in the second inning, as he made quick work of the Rattlers. The inning began with a throwing error, putting a runner on second base. Roberts wasn’t fazed, as he induced two groundouts and a strikeout to keep the Rattlers scoreless.

The A’s didn’t take their foot off the pedal, as they scored another run in the bottom of the second to increase their lead to 4-2. Roberts continued to dominate on the mound, as he struck out six batters on the night and continued to work out of jams. The A’s had another big inning in the fourth, when they scored three more runs to take a commanding 7-2 lead.

The Rattlers third run of the night came in the top of the seventh on a home run. Roberts would stay in the game to finish out the inning, and his line was complete. Roberts threw a full seven innings, gave up eight hits and two walks but struck out six. Roberts is now 3-1, with a 1.77 ERA.

The A’s scored another run in the eighth inning to take a 8-3 lead, as pitchers Nate Brown and Evan Rathburn pitched the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to close out the game. Rathburn gave up two singles in the ninth, but stranded both runners on base to end the game.

The A’s will finish the three game series today with a double header beginning at 3 p.m. The Journal will not have coverage of the double header, but you can follow the A’s on Twitter (@MidwestAs) or follow the team on Game Changer at http://www.gamechanger.com.
