On Aug. 9, the Raymore Historical Society celebrated 150 years since the founding of Raymore. Residents, including Council Member Reginald Townsend, gathered at the Raymore Historical Society Museum to celebrate the occasion.
Council members debate their role when discussing meeting time change

During the Aug. 8 Raymore City Council meeting, council members voted on a resolution that changes the time of council meetings from 7 p.m. to 6 p.m. With a 4-4 vote, Mayor Kristofer Turnbow cast the deciding vote to change the time. However, that was preceded by a debate between council members about their role and how to cast votes.
Essentially, the vote was either for government staff or for residents. The council narrowly voted for the former.
Ankita Kapoor attends healthcare academy

Ankita Kapoor of Raymore, who will be in the 10th grade at Raymore Peculiar High School this fall, is one of 50 students who participated in the ATSU-Truman State University Healthcare Academy, June 12 to 17. Residents tell city leaders how the city should grow

Dozens of residents gathered to tell the local government what they expect to see happen in Raymore in the next few decades.
On July 27, the City of Raymore held its Community Conversation at Centerview. Participating residents answered several questions that will guide the local government in its decision making in the near and not-so-near future.
Residents gave their two cents on four topics: Land use, economic vitality, infrastructure and parks.
State Historical Society of Missouri Releases Free Online Genealogy Series

I-49 widening, dozens of Cass County transport projects receive state approval

The I-49 widening project from 155th St. to North Cass Parkway is receiving funding from the state.
On July 6, the Missouri Highway Transportation Commission approved the $10 billion Statewide Transportation Improves Program (STIP). The program includes the $71 million I-49 widening project.
According to the city of Raymore, the Missouri Department of Transportation has begun preliminary design of the I-49 widening project. MoDOT expects the project to begin in the summer of 2024.
Controversial project on hold; trash service cost to increase

VanTrust wants to construct five buildings ranging in size from more than 300,000 square feet to about 1.2 million square feet. Rezoning will pave way for light-industrial development, including manufacturing and warehousing. One suspect taken into custody after Pleasant Hill pursuit

At about 1 p.m. on July 10, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office received a call of shots fired in the 26000 block of 159th street in rural Pleasant Hill.
Deputies observed the suspect in a stolen vehicle near the scene and a pursuit ensued. The suspect’s vehicle continued through the streets of the Pleasant Hill area until a push bumper of a patrol vehicle was used to stop the pursuit.
Three people injured by gunfire in Peculiar

At approximately 1242 a.m. on July 10, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office received a call of shots fired in the 7600 block of East 233rd street in rural Peculiar.
Deputies (with the assistance of the Peculiar Police Department, and Missouri State Highway Patrol) responded to the scene and located three victims that had been hit by gunfire. After the scene was secured, all three victims were transported by Emergency Medical Services to a local hospital for treatment.
A suspect was taken into custody at the scene of the incident. He is currently pending charges and is being held in the Cass County Jail. T
Belton Police Department unveils ‘soft’ interview room

According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, an American is sexually assaulted every 68 seconds, which is nearly 500,000 victims each year. Last year in Belton alone there were about 50 reports of rape or sexual assault. There were also more than 200 reports of domestic violence. Those numbers are not looking to improve this year.
To get those numbers down and the number of arrests up, Beal is addressing the victims and survivors of violent crimes. She is making sure they are comfortable enough to talk with law enforcement, and she’s starting at the interview room.
25 new troopers to graduate from Missouri State Highway Patrol Law Enforcement Academy

The recruits accumulate points toward graduation in the categories of physical fitness, firearms, and academics throughout their 25 weeks at the Academy. The person with the highest number of points in each category earns the respective award. Award categories include physical fitness, firearms, academics, and the Superintendent’s Award, which is presented to the person with the most points overall.
